Spanning the globe on a Monday morning …

Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart has apologized for shoving a Texas Tech fan. The fan has also apologized. He denies using a racial slur.

Court seating has been around a long time now. When it first appeared back in the late 1990s I thought we’d have seen more of these incidents by now.

Probably, there are more that push the envelope but don’t reach the level of what happened in Lubbock.

I can think of two such events that I’ve witnessed. One did not involve physical contact but was so intense, so clear that the intent was to draw a response from the player, that it should have resulted in admonishment of the fan but did not. The second involved a fan screaming at an official as officials ran off the court. It’s unclear if there was physical contact, but the fan was arrested. Neither of these events occurred at Ole Miss.

Courtside seating appeared as a new revenue stream at a time when it was becoming harder and harder to identify new streams.

It seems to be managed well in most places, but the responsibility for fan behavior does fall on the school. …
